Examples of how Linux and OpenSource can work for you.

Linux Anti-Virus program helps protect Windows

Did You Know???

One of the top known Anti-Virus software providers, Kapersky, recently made available an anti-virus program for use on Linux computers? It’s true. Why did they do this, according to them, it’s to help protect Windows based computers who might receive a virus passed ‘through’ Linux computers. Linux computers aren’t susceptible to almost any of the known viruses out there, but, they can still pass them on through email servers and having files and email forwarded from a Linux computer, like getting a free ride and not being able to get off at the Linux stations, just passing through.

A Tale of Two Servers

Did You Know?

A small catholic school ordered an HP ML server to take advantage of library management software they had purchased. With the purchase of the server, they purchased a copy of Windows Server 2003. About a year later, there was a problem in which the software all had to be re-installed. Upon calling the support phone number for the library management software, in order to retrieve the activation code, they were informed they were out of their support agreement and would have to arrange to start paid support again to get that information.

A new volunteer at the school was able to download OpenSource library management software ( OpenBibilio) and OpenSource web server software (EasyPHP, which provides win versions of Apache, MySQL and PHP) and was able to still get use from the already paid for Windows server installed and have a fully functioning Library server at no extra cost. OpenSource software and one volunteer saved several hundreds of dollars and ‘rescued’ the investment already put into to the server itself.

Linux powered servers help you find the internet

Did You Know?

Google is probably the largest and most used Internet search engine and one of the largest Software as a Service providers. Google uses Linux based servers to accomplish these feats. Every day, the same Linux that powers some of the most used and accessible servers in the world, is also able to be used on your own servers and desktops for free. Don’t believe me? Google it.

OpenSource does Windows

Did You Know?

OpenSource software runs on Windows and Mac Operating Systems also? There are versions of some of the most used Opensource apps in Linux for Windows, Mac, Solaris and others also. Apps like Apache web server, MySQL Database, even Webmin can run on Windows. Most of these Windows versions come in .exe and .msi files for quick and easy installation. This allows you to get the most out of the money you spent on a proprietary OS and still get things done and save a lot of money and frustration with OpenSource software.

Linux gets a little help from it’s friends

Did you know?

The Linux kernel, which is the ‘core’ of the Operating System itself, has code and ‘patches’ (improvements or modifications to the code) contributed to it by no less than twenty seven (27) established companies.  These include IBM, Google, Intel, Oracle, HP, Cisco, Fujitsu and Broadcom.  There are whole lists of contributors extending beyond that which include more companies as well as individuals.

Both the Linux Kernel and the GNU applications that run on the kernel are supported by some of the most respected and established tech companies in the world.

Did You Know?

The OpenSource web server ‘Apache’ is the number one used web serving software in the world?   According to recent statistics, Apache servers account for about 47 percent of all the servers in the world. That’s pretty impressive for being Free and OpenSource Software.
