BEL Project FAQ

Before you check anything else, before you ask in the forums or ask on the IRC channel, have you looked to see if the answer is already on the FAQ? If the answer is not in the FAQ, the next place to look is in the BEL Education Center.

We know that everyone likes immediate gratification and most folks are prone to thinking they can get a quicker answer by just popping in and asking. Check these sources first anyway. A lot of work is going into providing answers to issues that arise often. If the answer you find in these locations isn't adequate or appropriate to your question, please feel free to come and ask in the forums or IRC.

Don't be angry if someone asks you if you checked the Wiki first. We tried to tell you.

Status of BEL solutions

Linux and BSD are probably the most secure and flexible Operating systems around in regards to servers and networks. While BEL Project isn't producing our own ISO's like we used to we want to help as much as we can to using one of the existing distributions.

We would like to refer you to OpenSuse's new online tool http://susestudio.com/ for creating a unique and specific server based on opensuse. Of course, Using the Opensuse install DVD is also a terrific starting point as well.

Of course, there are other great options for Servers as well, in Debian and CentOS. For the 'home server', we might suggest using Ubuntu Server or PCLinuxOS (which will have to be modified).

We are still making some effort to provide an installable LiveCD ISO of a Linux based server to give those completely new to Linux a chance to 'test drive" a Linux server system. At this point in time, we are offering an ISO using the OpenSuse build service to offer both a 32 and 64 bit ISO.

Not only does having a LiveCD server allow you to try it before you buy it (sort of, at least before you commit hard drive space to it), it gives you a portable tool to run system tests and recovery of an installed system as well.

Every Linux admin needs to have tools. These can consist of your screwdrivers and testing lights and fancy wriing connectors. More-so than these though, is information, resources that arm the Linux admin with what to do, how to do it and maybe even why they're doing it.

We place all the information we will find and write ourselves in our Education Center.

Links to books, How To's and anything else we can find to help provide the Linux admin with as many tools as possible.
